If you’ve been following and reading our work then you know that we explored and still explore the world of coins extensively. You can’t imagine how many valuable and amazing coins are out there. The biggest mistake is that people think only old coins are valuable collectible items, and that is far from the truth.

That is why we decided to make a small break from writing about older coins and introduce you to a new age of US coins worth investing in and collecting. We will start our series with the first quarter coin from the American Woman Quarter program – the Maya Angelou Quarter.

Before we dwell more into talking about the 2022 Maya Angelou Quarter value and basic information, let’s quickly peek at the average price ranges to find out what we can expect.

There is a significant difference between the prices of uncirculated and circulated coins. For instance, 2022 Maya Angelou Quarters in circulated condition are estimated to be worth between $0.57 and $3 while those in mint state are $27.

However, a lot of circulated coins are still in good condition and suitable as collecting examples. Here is the list of the top 3 common coins worth investing in:

Why Is The American Women Quarter Series Special?

The American Women Quarters Program was authorized by a Public Law. This unique commemorative quarter series features coins with reverse designs honoring American women who contributed to the US with their work and accomplishments.

Running until 2025, this program will issue five quarters, one each year, with a different reverse design. Meaning that every year will be unique! Also, that means that each of these amazing women will be featured only once and on a limited number of coins!

The honors in 2022 are reserved for Maya Angelou the celebrated writer, performer, and social activist. She was the first black woman to be featured on a United States quarter coin.

Second honors go to physicist and first woman astronaut Dr. Sally Ride. Following is the first female principal chief of the Cherokee Nation and activist for Native American and women’s rights Wilma Mankiller. A leader in New Mexico’s suffrage movement and the first female superintendent of Santa Fe public schools Nina Otero-Warren

Lastly, Anna May Wong was the first Chinese American film star in Hollywood. She is best known as an actress who achieved international success despite racism and discrimination.

Price Guide For Common 2022 Maya Angelou Quarter Coins Worth Investing

As we said, the American Women program was created to honor five women that contributed to the United States with their accomplishments in fields such as civil rights, abolition, government, humanities, science, space, and arts.

The first coin in this program was Maya Angelou Quarter released on 3 January 2022. Considering this coin is only a year and a half old we can’t talk about its value in general since the records we have are very fresh.

However, keep in mind that only 2022 Quarter coins will have her portrait on the reverse side, so in time this coin will gain more value and become rarer than it currently is.

2022-P mint mark Quarter value

2022 Maya Angelou Quarter Value - 2022-P mint mark Quarter value

As always, the Philadelphia Mint produced a large volume of quarters for the purpose of circulation. However, this time it was the second-largest minting volume of around 237,600,000 2022 Maya Angelou quarters. You will easily recognize this coin by design, and the “P” mint mark is located on the obverse side of the coin.

The value of this coin variety is not significant, due to the high mintage volume. However, since these coins are relatively new there aren’t many of them available on the market. You can even try to obtain it from the circulation.

If you don’t mind keeping a circulated coin you can buy a specimen in a price range of $0.25 to $3, if it is in good condition. Those that are in the mint state will sell for a slightly higher price, and they can cost from $10 and up.

Naturally, all these coins achieve much higher prices on auctions. For instance, 2022-P Maya Angelou Quarter graded with MS 67 was sold for $299.

2022-D mint mark Quarter value

2022 Maya Angelou Quarter Value - 2022-D mint mark Quarter value

Surprisingly in 2022, Denver Mint produced the largest minting volume of Maya Angelou quarters. Exactly 258,200,000 coins were released into circulation. These coins can be recognized by the “D” mint mark placed on the obverse side.

Just like with the P variety, these coins could not hold any significant value considering the mintage volume and availability in the circulation. Also, there are not many of these coins available on the market.

An average selling price goes from $0.25 to $3, for circulated coins in good condition, while those in almost perfect condition will worth a few tens of dollars. The highest price goes for uncirculated coins which can reach prices above $50!

The best example is the 2022-D Maya Angelou quarter with grade MS68 sold for $599.

2022-S mint mark Quarter value

2022 Maya Angelou Quarter Value - 2022-S mint mark Quarter value

In the 2022 Maya Angelou quarters that were minted in San Francisco were produced in two different finishes – proof and business strike. The proof coins were minted on both the clad and silver planchets. Keep in mind that silver coins are made on blanks with 99.9% silver.

These quarters struck in both proof and business strikes were made for collectors only. The business strike was minted in the volume of 303,480 coins. On the other hand, proof-clad quarters had a mintage volume of 441,599, while silver proof had a volume of 338,270.

It is still unclear why proof strike varieties were minted in larger volumes, and why business strike coins weren’t released into circulation.

The highest price tag for a 2022-S Maya Angelou coin is for a coin with grade MS69 and it was $2,499.

The Main Features Of The 2022 Maya Angelou Quarter Coins

The design of this quarter coin is somewhat similar to what we used to see when we flip the 25C coin. As usual, the obverse side of the coin features a portrait of George Washington facing right. A portrait that was originally composed for the commemoration of his 200th birthday is still in use.

An all-time favorite American word “LIBERTY” is engraved just above his head. While an inscription “IN GOD WE TRUST”  is placed behind his neck. On the opposite side, below his chin, the mint mark and minting year are engraved.

The only thing that changes is the image on the reverse side. When you flip the coin you’ll notice an image of Maya Angelou with her arms uplifted, while behind her a sun is rising. Also, you can notice a bird in flight with its wings outstretched.

This image was inspired by her poetry.  The inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” is placed above the rising sun following the upper rim. On the left side of the image her name  “MAYA ANGELOU” is engraved, while on the opposite side, you can find a “E PLURIBUS UNUM” inscription. A denomination “QUARTER DOLLAR” is as usual placed following the lower rim of the coin.

The Maya Angelou Quarter coin was minted in Philadelphia (P), San Francisco (S), and Denver (D) Mint facilities. These coins were minted on planchet made of copper-nickel clad composition. However, there is also a variety of proof coins minted on 99% silver planchet.

What Errors Can Be Found On 2022 Maya Angelou Quarters?

Uninevitably some of the coins were minted with errors. As we all know errors are what makes a coin even more valuable to collectors. The good news is that there are several varieties of the Maya Angelou quarter errors. Each is named after the location of the die marking.

The most popular is a “Drooling George” or “Drooling Washington” error. Here a die gouge looks like a drool on Washington’s chin. The second favorite error is the “Wart on the Nose” also called the “Cold Sore” error. This error is characteristic of blemishes on Washington’s face due to die marks.

A very rare and unique error is the “Nesting Bird” variety where a die gouge is shaped as a twig and appears to be carried by a bird’s beak.

These errors are highly sought-after by collectors. Their price ranges are estimated to go from a few hundred to thousands of dollars. However, once again since these coins are still relatively new, we do not have the complete list of all errors. They are yet to be found.

If error coins are your thing, make sure you read our article about Rare And Valuable 2022 Quarter Errors.

Where Can You Trade Valuable 2022 Maya Angelou Quarters?

Well, this is a tricky part. Trading relatively new coins is always a difficult task. First, there are not too many specimens available for comparing and forming prices according to them. Second, in most cases, people are not satisfied with the price, since let’s be honest we all think our items are worth more.

Usually, we always recommend buying or selling valuable coins at reliable dealers such as

Heritage Auctions, PCGS, Coins For Sale, Stack’s Bowers, or Littleton Coin Company, but this time you won’t find any here, well not yet. The reason is that these coins are too novice to be submitted to these auction houses.

Don’t despair, you know that the Internet is a place where you can easily find a solution. Platforms like eBay, Etsy, and LiveAuctioneers are the ones where you can find an abundance of these coins. However, trade carefully and be aware that there are many replicas available as well!

FAQ

Who was Maya Angelou?

Maya Angelou was a celebrated writer, performer, social activist, and the first black woman featured on a US coin. Angelou’s published works include more than 30 bestselling titles. She also appeared in Broadway and off-Broadway plays.

At the request of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., she was employed as the northern coordinator of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. In the 1992 inauguration of President Clinton, Maya Angelou was the first  African American woman to write and presented a poem at a presidential inauguration.

Difference between business strike and proof coins

San Francisco mint produces regular strike as well as proof coins. It is a must to know that there are two different varieties of proof coins a cameo and deep cameo contrast. The difference between a regular strike and proof coins is in clarity. You will easily recognize CAM and DCAM coins by their deeply polished and highly reflective surface from the regular strike coins.

Remember that CAM and DCAM coins feature a contrast that has a mirror-like luster. If you take a good look you’ll notice that all the details, like letters and bust appear milky or frosty white. In some cases, coins may look like they are black and white, due to the contrast.

On the other hand, regular strike coins do not have a highly reflective luster, and they appear more matte and with less pronounced details.
